Solid Waste Management (SWM): SBM(G) is supporting States /UTs transforming rural sanitation and waste management over the past decade. While significant capital expenditure has been made to set up Rural Plastic Waste Management Units, resource recovery centers and waste collection machinery across Gram Panchayats (GPs), the O&M in rural areas presents distinct challenges compared to urban centers, including lack of adequate private sector players/ recyclers; limited options for recycling. Background: Solid Waste Management has been implemented across all rural villages in India. The primary challenge lies in establishing an end-to-end, self-sustaining dry waste management system tailored for the rural ecosystem. Description: Development of low cost solution for ready to use Solid Waste management technologies for villages on 4 stream source segregation, aggregation and last mile collection and processing. Expected Solution: Simple, low cost, low-bandwidth software or lot tools that operate effectively in low-connectivity rural zones. Demand-based or dynamic route optimization for collection vehicles with low-cost digital tracking at village-level aggregation points and establishing forward linkages for revenue generation from the waste. Potential Impact: Establishing end-end value chain for overall Solid Waste Management through low-cost technology and converting mixed/MLP plastics into construction materials (e.g., paver blocks, fencing posts, roof sheets) or durable goods.

That puts it 241st of the 245 statements that have any ideas at all, out of 258 on the board. It is moving, so the field here is already forming.

Added mid-season. This statement first appeared on 1 October, after the original list went out. Teams who shortlisted early have most likely never seen it.

Counted from the official portal twice a day. The portal itself only shows today.

What a jury will ask about this

  1. 01“Who actually faces this problem today?”

What works: Naming one real person and what they do instead right now. Reading the statement back is not an answer, they already read it.

  2. 02“This already exists. Why yours?”

What works: That existing tools are consumer products. Yours is built for the ministry, works offline, in the local language, on official data.

  3. 03“Then why has nobody solved it yet?”

What works: The real blocker. No connectivity, no incentive, nobody owns the data. You only know this if you read the ministry's own reports.
