Individual Household Latrine (IHHL): Ensuring construction and sustained usage of individual household latrines in rural India remains a challenge due to behavioural resistance, water scarcity, structural quality issues, and lack of monitoring mechanisms. Background: SBM(G) promotes in-situ treatment-based sanitation systems that safely contain and treat excreta at the source without requiring mechanized emptying, transportation or centralized treatment. However, there is a need to further improve the efficiency of these systems by accelerating waste decomposition, enhancing pathogen reduction and minimizing sludge accumulation. The problem seeks innovative technological, biochemical, or nature-based solutions that can strengthen in-situ treatment performance while remaining affordable, sustainable and suitable for rural contexts. Description: Innovate technological, biochemical, or nature-based solutions that can accelerate in-situ treatment and stabilization of excreta, enhance pathogen reduction, improve nutrient recovery and minimize environmental risks without adversely affecting soil quality or the water table. The proposed interventions should be cost-effective, scalable and suitable for diverse rural settings. Expected Solution: A cost-effective, scalable and environmentally safe in-situ excreta treatment solution that accelerates stabilization, reduces pathogens, enhances nutrient recovery and protects soil and groundwater quality across diverse rural settings. Potential Impact: Safer sanitation for rural households; lower Green House Gases (GHGs) emissions; improved compost use in agriculture.
On site containment-based Toilets: Innovative technological, biochemical, or nature-based interventions for expediting in-situ treatment of excreta without harming environment/ water table

How contested this one is
as of 1 OctNobody has submitted an idea against this one yet. 13 of the 258 statements are still on zero, so an empty count this early says the field has not arrived, not that the statement is bad.
Added mid-season. This statement first appeared on 1 October, after the original list went out. Teams who shortlisted early have most likely never seen it.

What a jury will ask about this
01“Who actually faces this problem today?”
What works: Naming one real person and what they do instead right now. Reading the statement back is not an answer, they already read it.
02“This already exists. Why yours?”
What works: That existing tools are consumer products. Yours is built for the ministry, works offline, in the local language, on official data.
03“Then why has nobody solved it yet?”
What works: The real blocker. No connectivity, no incentive, nobody owns the data. You only know this if you read the ministry's own reports.
