Day 1Safety16 Oct 2026
VirusTotal: check any file or link for viruses before you open it
“WhatsApp pe "Wedding_Card.apk" aaya hai? Kholne se pehle check karo.”
Upload a suspicious file or paste a link and dozens of antivirus engines and URL scanners check it at once, for free, before it ever touches your phone or laptop.
- Free
- No login
- Nothing to install
- by Google
How to use it
- 01Open virustotal.com.
- 02Choose File to upload the file, or URL to paste the link.
- 03Wait a few seconds while dozens of security engines check it.
- 04Read the score: 0 flagged means no engine found anything; several red flags mean do not open it.
Use it when
- Someone sends an .apk, .exe or .zip on WhatsApp or email, especially a "wedding card", "bill" or "KYC" file.
- A link in an SMS looks like your bank or a delivery company.
- You downloaded software from somewhere other than an official store.
Keep in mind
- Do not upload personal photos or documents: uploaded files are shared with security researchers.
- Zero flags is a good sign, not a guarantee. A brand-new scam may not be known yet, so still do not install apps from strangers.
Questions people ask
Is VirusTotal free?
Yes. Scanning files and links on the website is free and needs no account.
Can I check an APK before installing it?
Yes. Upload the .apk on the File tab. If several engines flag it as a trojan or malware, delete it and do not install it.
Is it safe to upload my files to VirusTotal?
Only upload files you are suspicious of. Anything you upload can be seen by security researchers, so never upload personal documents or photos.
